The Town Centre Pastoral Team is comprised of Christians from most of the churches in the Aldershot area. Primarily it is a night-time outreach with a presence in the town centre every Friday and Saturday night through the year. There are also teams out in day times, usually Thursdays, which is market day, both with a table in the Wellington Centre and patrols of ones and twos.
It is a distinctively Christian ministry aiming to listen, encourage, help, bless and pray for any and all we may meet in a sensitive way. We meet and engage with several thousand people every year, many of whom open up about significantly deep and painful issues in their lives which we can then pray for, offer practical, emotional and spiritual help as well as signpost to other specialist organisations.
The team, as it now is, was started on 1st May 2008, but has its roots in a monthly church outreach from one of the local churches which started three years previously. The Police have noticed how, when the teams are out, the crime and incident rates drop significantly!
At night, we have a table at "Banks Corner" - the junction of Victoria Road and Gordon Road outside The George and by NatWest bank. The trained team provide a safe place for people to find a sympathetic ear and we also offer Mars Bars and water - as well as tea, coffee, flip flops, Spikeys and, of course, lollipops!
The day time teams out in the town are ready to chat with or help those they meet. There is also a specialist 'table ministry' in the Wellington Centre on market days, offering prayer, a listening ear, encouraging words as well as Psalm reading.
Members of the team are from local churches. All have received training and are CRB checked.
Funding comes through generous donations from churches, local authorities, businesses and charities as well as from individuals.
